History

The Areal Volcano was locally known as Cerro Arenal (Arenal Mountain), until its surprise awakening in July of 1968. The active period that began then opened the door for ecological tourism in the area of La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica, and the Cedeño Villegas family found the way of combining the natural drama and beauty together in a private garden of air, water and fire.

“This land, God lent it to us so we could take care of it.”

In 1984, opened a camping area for spiritual retreats on one of the lakes at the foot of the Arenal Volcano. In time, as the beauty of the place attracted more and more visitors, he started adding facilities. In 1985, an admission fee of 50 colones was established in order to finance the additions the guests requested, starting with the basic facilities and culminated in a cold-water pool and fast food restaurant in 1995 and the hotel’s first eight rooms in 1995. Thus, Los Lagos Hotel, Spa & Resort was literally born to satisfy the needs and desires of its guests.

Over the years the area continued to develop and grow, and the family’s hard work and ability to interpret the desires of their guests led them to establish a Crocodile Farm and improve their hot spring facilities. Today, Los Lagos Hotel, Spa & Resort does not only prosper, but also helps the surrounding community: owner Fabio and his wife donated the lot and the house for the “Hogarcito Don Bosco” orphanage. Los Lagos Hotel, Spa & Resort also supports national sports.

Today, Los Lagos Hotel, Spa & Resort is the most comprehensive, peaceful, adventurous and restful place that you can find in the Arenal Area.
