Can lava from the Arenal Volcano be seen from Los Lagos Hotel? Boton
Yes, it can, although not all the time. Each time a Strombolian eruption occurs (a spectacular explosion that shoots up red-hot lava, so named after Italy’s Stromboli volcano) it can be seen with suitable weather conditions and without solar light. These eruptions are unpredictable and surprising events that manifest for about one minute. Currently, the Arenal Volcano produces about 10 Strombolian eruptions a day, but only the nocturnal ones allow the red-hot radiance of volcanic rocks to be seen. If you take the time to pay attention to the volcano on clear nights, which is worth the effort, surely you'll have the chance to witness some of these events. And if you prepare properly, you may even be able to photograph it.
Why is the Arenal Volcano almost always covered in clouds (practically invisible)? Boton
This is a misinterpretation of the daily evaporation and cloud formation cycle of the tropical rainforest: the volcano is covered during the peak hours of human activity, when heat from the Sun turns ground condensation into clouds. Actually, during the coolest times of the day the volcano is almost always visible. It is clear and spectacular at dawn, precisely because at that time there is light but the environment has not received enough solar heat yet to make evaporation an issue.
Is it possible to get a clear Arenal Volcano view? Boton
"The early bird catches the worm", and gets a spectacular clear view of the Arenal Volcano at dawn. This is a reality that is almost always true, from 4-5 a.m. to 8-9 a.m. Of course there can be cloudy days, but the above-mentioned conditions are the most usual. Also, there is sometimes clear weather (lack of low clouds) for more time or at other hours through the day, even with blue sky, but those are less regular conditions.
Is it possible to tell when the weather could clear? Boton
Yes, that is the case of most dawns, as explained above. Also, it is very likely that there will be clear weather after intensely opposite conditions. For example, after a strong rain, even with lightning, the Arenal Volcano clears. Or after a period of several rainy days, we may get several clear days.
How can the Arenal Volcano's continuous lava flows be appreciated while staying at Los Lagos Hotel? Boton
This is possible from any point within the hotel. The Los Lagos Tour Operator makes it possible for you to plan a nocturnal visit to the Arenal Volcano, depending on weather conditions.
Don't forget that after an intense and active tour day you can relax in the hotel’s natural hot springs and enjoy the health and beauty of our Fangus Spa.
